WHAT: Grand opening celebration of the new Fire Station No.15. The fire station was created to better serve the residents of University Park, West Adams, Exposition Park and surrounding neighborhoods and protect some of Los Angeles’ most iconic structures, such as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the Shrine Auditorium.

The state-of-the-art facility will improve response times as it includes a drive-through section for fire trucks and engines and the station’s egress is no longer on a heavily trafficked street. With more space, the station features new amenities, including a separate sleeping quarters for female firefigthers.

The $16 million, 17,000 square foot Italian Romanesque station sits on one acre and fits in with the nearby and recently completed USC Caruso Catholic Center and USC Village, a $700 million retail and residential development due to open in 2017.

USC funded the building of the new fire station and the preservation of the historic façade of the old 1950s-era firehouse.

The new station, just a few blocks from the old, will house a hook-and-ladder fire truck, two fire engines and a paramedic rescue ambulance.

Fire Station No. 15 replaces an outdated and much smaller facility that was built 65 years ago at a cost of $147,000. The front of the old station was saved and moved to the USC Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts, where it will be repurposed into a production studio.
