First Lady Michelle Obama, Mayor Eric Garcetti Keynote Unite for Veterans Summit

Summit on July 16 gathers local, state and federal stakeholders to highlight efforts to help veterans after their service

WHAT: Unite for Veterans is an event that will bring together key city, state and federal officials; business leaders; and community stakeholders to highlight best practices in employment and housing to provide veterans with meaningful opportunities after their service. The Summit is organized by United Way of Greater Los Angeles, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the University Of Southern California Price School of Public Policy.

WHY/STATS: L.A. County is home to 328,000 veterans, representing nearly 1/5 of the state’s veteran population

• 1 in 3 post-9/11 veterans is unemployed or underemployed – 18% are unemployed and 17% are underemployed, not making sustainable income levels

• According to the most recent census 11% of post-9/11 veterans in L.A. County were living at poverty levels

• Of the 39,461 homeless individuals in Los Angeles County, 1 out of 8 are veterans
