WHAT: The Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center, the first building on the USC campus dedicated to the study of dance, will officially open Oct. 5.

The 54,000 square-foot building, with two stories and a mezzanine, houses a studio performance space, five medium and small dance studios, a dance wellness center, dressing rooms, a training and fitness zone, space for future classrooms, and offices for faculty and administrators. A large collaborative space for dance majors is located on the top floor.

The hallmark of USC Kaufman — as expressed in its motto “The New Movement” — is the development of new movement models for dance, where intersecting dance techniques create hybrid forms to be expressed in new media, scholarship, studio practice and choreography. USC Kaufman also provides students with opportunities to work and collaborate with world-renowned artists and to study in a range of dance styles, from ballet to hip-hop, contemporary and ballroom.

Located across the street from the new USC Village, the center stands at the gateway of the busiest pedestrian crossing on campus — on Watt Way between Jefferson Boulevard and West 34th Street. It joins USC’s five arts schools — architecture, cinematic arts, dramatic arts, music and fine arts/design — which comprise one of the strongest university arts offerings in the United States.

USC President C. L. Max Nikias will host the ribbon-cutting ceremony. USC Kaufman Dean Robert A. Cutietta and USC Trustee Glorya Kaufman will offer remarks.
