Olympic teams are finalized as Brazil continues to struggle

Predicting crisis events

Joseph Palacios, expert in religion and politics, religion and social movements, and the popeJoseph Palacios has performed two years of background research on the run up to the Olympics for Hughes Research Labs (HRL) in Malibu. By analyzing hundreds of news articles and social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, etc), Palacios helped develop algorithms for predicting crisis events in Brazil.

Palacios is an expert on the social movements and political issues that have put Brazil in its current emergency situation as the Olympics begin. He also can speak on the role of religion in Brazilian public life.

Palacios is a sociologist specializing in Latin American political culture and research fellow of USC’s Center for Religion and Civic Culture.

Olympic glory sometimes comes with a price

Seth Gamradt, sports injury expertSeth Gamradt is a specialist in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. He is the director of Orthopaedic Athletic Medicine for USC Athletics, and also is a team physician for United States Women’s Soccer. In the past, he was an assistant team physician to the New York Giants football team. He is one of the “Top Doctors” as ranked by U.S. News and World Report.

jay liebermanJay Lieberman is an expert in primary and revision total hip and knee replacement and treatment of osteonecrosis (bone death) of the hip and knee. He is professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and director of the Institute of Orthopaedics at the Keck Medical Center of USC. He is the immediate past president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

Durbin, a clinical professor of communication, is the director of the USC Annenberg Institute of Sports, Media & Society. He is an expert on popular culture, mass media and sports.

Marketing the Summer Olympics

Ira KalbIra Kalb is an expert in marketing strategy, high-tech marketing and social media. Kalb can speak on the effect corporate sponsors and public health crises may have on the Summer Olympics. He can also speak on the brand of Brazil and the Olympic Games.

Kalb is an assistant professor of clinical marketing at the USC Marshall School of Business.

Trojans competing in the Olympics

USC OlympiansUSC has more Olympians, medalists and gold medalists than any school. Since 1904, 420 Trojan athletes have competed in the Summer and Winter Games, taking home 135 gold medals (with at least one gold in every Summer Olympics since 1912), 88 silver and 64 bronze. If USC was an independent country, it would rank sixth in the world for most medals earned.
